China State Council Issues Belt & Road Initiative White Paper

Report states that total bilateral investment has reached US$380 billion while BRI cumulative trade has reached US$19 trillion.

China’s State Council has issued a new Belt & Road Initiative White paper, titled “The Belt and Road Initiative: A Key Pillar of the Global Community of Shared Future.” The report can be downloaded, in English, here.

The Chinese government has published this white paper to present the achievements of the BRI during the past 10 years, and to give the international community a better understanding of the value of the BRI and encourage cooperation within it.

The White Paper, with a length of about 28,000 words, systematically elaborates on the historical origin, conceptual vision, implementation path, practical achievements and world significance of the Belt and Road initiative (“BRI”), and comprehensively introduces the fruitful results of the Belt and Road initiative in the past decade.

According to the document, BRI participating countries continue to uphold multilateralism and free trade, working hard to create a sound institutional environment for closer economic and trade relations. By the end of August 2023, more than 80 countries and international organizations had subscribed to the Initiative on Promoting Unimpeded Trade Cooperation Along the Belt and Road, proposed by China.

The White Paper also stated that, from 2013 to 2022, the cumulative value of imports and exports between China and BRI partner countries reached US$19.1 trillion, with an average annual growth rate of 6.4 percent. The cumulative two-way investment between China and partner countries reached US$380 billion, including US$240 billion from China.
